Language, Cognition, and the Right Hemisphere A Response to
In: http://web.nsboro.k12.ma.us/algonquin/faculty/socialstudiesteachers/smith/documents/UnitsCognitionandBiologicalBasesofBehavior.pdf
Abstract: Gazzaniga (this issue) raises two major issues. The first concerns the role of the right hemisphere in language, and he concludes that the normal and typ-ical right hemisphere is nonlinguistic. Manifesta-tions of linguistic ability in the right hemisphere of split-brain patients are attributed to early damage to critical areas of the left hemisphere that resulted in a reorganization and bilateralization of language functions. I concur entirely. As a secondary point, however, he assumes that any capacity to extract meaning from spoken or written words is indicative of linguistic competence. I believe this assumption has no justification whatsoever. The second major issue he addresses relates to the behavioral and cog-nitive characteristics of the nonlinguistic right hemi-sphere, and Gazzaniga claims, first, that the right hemisphere is passive and nonresponsive and, sec-ond, that the limits of its cognitive abilities are man-ifested in simple matching-to-sample tasks. It is my view that the data overwhelmingly disconfirm these assertions.
